Prototype Information - Books and Journals

A note from the stewards of this site regarding the Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment series, published by Morning Sun Books:

While this series has been a very valuable addition to the libraries of many prototype modelers, it has also proven to be highly inconsistent in its attention to detail. Therefore, we will only list the books from that series that we believe to be beyond reproach in their accuracy. Thank you for your understanding. Great Northern Lines East, Second Edition, Patrick C. Dorin, Signature Press: Wilton, CA, 2001. http://www.signaturepress.com/gnle.html

From the Signature Press web site:
"The most distinctive addition to the book is an entirely new chapter on Great Northern freight equipment, by experts Richard H. Hendrickson and Staffan Ehnbom. Starting about 1910 and extending to 1970, coverage is included for all types of freight cars. This chapter alone contains 142 new photos, along with a few from the previous edition. There is no comparable resource anywhere for detailed coverage of GN freight cars over this span of time."

Great Northern Equipment Color Pictorial Book One - Box Cars & Stock Cars, Scott R. Thompson, Four Ways West Publications: La Mirada, CA, 1995

Great Northern Equipment Color Pictorial Book Two - Freight Cars, Scott R. Thompson, Four Ways West Publications: La Mirada, CA, 1996

Great Northern Equipment Color Pictorial Book Three - Western Fruit Express, Cabooses, Maintenance-of-Way, Scott R. Thompson, Four Ways West Publications: La Mirada, CA, 2000

The focus of three GN Equipment Color Pictorial Books is the late 1960s. Any GN freight car that was in service in 1969 was included if photographs and information on the car were available while preparing the books. In total, all three books include 384 pages and several hundred photographs (many of which are in color). The books are organized to provide a photographic reference and basic information on each car series type. Many of the sections include a reference for every car series that existed at that time. Information in the three books is based on an extensive use of Great Northern Railway company records at the Minnesota Historical Society, data from the American Association of Railroads, railroad industry journals 'Railway Age' and 'Modern Railroads', the author's private collection of GN documents, along with several other sources. This web site will also include an errata list based on corrections, new information, etc.
